CMSA
The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association was founded in 1995 to stage and promote competitions in which contestants ride a horse in a designated pattern with the objective of shooting 10 targets and getting back across the finish line faster than the other competitors. Each competitor carries two .45-caliber single-action revolvers, and each gun is loaded with five rounds of ammunition. At the beginning of the run, the guns are in holsters, so part of the challenge, in addition to hitting the balloon targets rapidly, is getting the guns in and out of the holsters. While it is a timed event with the fastest time winning, there are penalties for rule infractions like missing a balloon (five second penalty), dropping a gun, not holstering the first gun before removing the second, knocking over a barrel, or not following the course. The ammunition used is a blank; the cartridge is loaded with black powder similar to that used in the 1800’s. The load will break a balloon from a distance of up to 15 feet. There are six levels of competition so riders don’t have to be experts to compete. To move up to a higher level, you have to win a certain number of classes at your current level. There are over 100 CMSA Clubs World Wide with over 500 sanctioned events in 39 states including Canada and Sweden. Tony Lama is the Official Footwear of the CMSA.
